St. Thomas
Synagogue (Founded 1796)
The St. Thomas
Synagogue is a historic synagogue in Queens Quarters, Charlotte
Amalie. The formal name of the synagogue is Beracha Veshalom
Vegmiluth Hasidim. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in
1997. This is the second oldest synagogue on United States soil. It
also has the longest history of continuous use by a Jewish
congregation in the nation.
Jews first settled
in the Virgin Islands in 1655 when it was ruled by Denmark. These
were mainly traders in sugarcane, rum and Molasses. One of the
first Jews in the Virgin Islands was Gabriel Milan, whom King
Christian of Denmark sent in 1664 to be governor, the first of
three Jews who have served as governors. In 1685, the Jews and
Catholics were granted freedom of religion and about two centuries
later, in 1850, the Islands' Jewish population hit its peak,
numbering 400 and making up half of the white community. After the
opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the number of Jews declined
rapidly and by 1942 only 50 Jews remained. Since then the community
has rebounded and is roughly the size it was at its peak. A number
of famous Jews have been born in the Virgin Islands including
French impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and David Levy Yulee,
Florida's first senator.
In 1796, the Jews
of St. Thomas founded a synagogue that is now considered the oldest
continuous-use synagogue under the American flag. In 1801, only
nine Jewish families belonged to the congregation but, by 1803,
this number had increased to 22, with arrivals from England,
France, St. Eustatius, and Curacao. The Congregation numbered 64 families when a
city-wide fire destroyed the Synagogue in 1831. The present-day Synagogue was
built in 1833 with the help from worldwide Jewry and the entire
island community. Sabbath religious services have been held there
every week since 1833 with only one exception: September 15, 1995,
when Hurricane Marilyn devastated the island.
The synagogue was
built in the traditional Sephardic style since its original
congregants migrated as a result of the Spanish Inquisition. In
Sephardic architecture, the seating permits congregants to face one
another instead of theater-style as in Ashkenazic and most
stateside synagogues. Also in keeping with Sephardic architecture,
the bimah, where the Rabbi or reader stands, is opposite the ark in
which six Torahs are housed.
Everything in the
historic St. Thomas Synagogue building is original, dating back to
1833. The four
pillars that support the building symbolize the four matriarchs in
Judaism: Sarah, Rachel, Rebecca and Leah.
An unusual feature
of the synagogue is its sand floor. Legend tells us that it is
symbolic of the desert through which Moses and the children of
Israel wandered for 40 years. The more likely explanation is that
this was originally a Sephardic Orthodox community. During the
Spanish Inquisition, when Catholic Spain persecuted all other
religions and forcibly converted the Jews to Catholicism, Jews who
opted to practice Judaism - an offense punishable by death - had to
do so in secrecy. They met in cellars of their homes and used sand
to muffle the sounds of their prayer.
Today, the
synagogue is affiliated with Reform Judaism. The low wooden walls
served as a m'chitzah to separate the women from the men during the
early years when the Congregation was Orthodox. Since the synagogue
is the only one on the island, it serves the religious needs of a
diverse Jewish population. The first Confirmation ceremony in the
Western Hemisphere took place at the synagogue on October 14,
1843.
In the year of the
Bicentennial, 1995-96, a small museum was added to the synagogue.
The museum demonstrates the history of the congregation and the
synagogue and displays some of the artifacts of the Jewish history
on the island.

11:00 AM to 1:00 PM: Scenic island tour to include Skyline Overlook, Drake's seat, and Mountain Top.

- Shopping in downtown St. Thomas or return to cruise ship.
- Guests who go shopping in downtown St. Thomas will be on their own for their return to the cruise ship by 5:00 PM.
The tour starts
with a two-hour orientation tour of St. Thomas, with stops at some
of the island's highlights and exciting views of the island
itself.
St. Thomas is a
mountainous island with one long ridge of hills running east and
west through the center of the island, with smaller ridges
branching off. The island is 13 miles long by four miles wide,
encompassing a little over 31 square miles. The highest point is
Crown Mountain at 1,556 feet.
St. Thomas has a history that dates back to 1500 B.C. and the
Ciboney people. They were replaced by the Arawaks and then the
Caribes, long before Christopher Columbus first saw the island in
1493 on his second voyage to the "New World." Unfortunately, almost
all signs of the pre-Columbus days have been lost to
time.
Most of the
structures and ruins that remain date from the 16th and 17th
century and include Blackbeard's Castle (Skytsborg), Fort Christian
and Bluebeard's Castle (Tower Fort). During your scenic orientation
drive you will be able to see them on nearby hilltops.
Riding along the
crest of St. Thomas on "Skyline Drive," visitors are treated to
vistas of Charlotte Amalie town, harbor as well as Hassel and Water
Islands to the south; the Atlantic Ocean, Magens Bay and Inner and
Outer Brass and Hans Lollick islands to the north; and the chain of
cays leading to St. John and the British Virgins to the
east.
Your driver/guide
will make stops at various scenic overlooks as traffic / safety
allows. You will pass by Drake's Seat, believed to be the spot
where Sir Francis Drake himself watched for enemy vessels. A stop
will be made at Mountain Top, where you will take in the most
amazing views from the balcony of the shopping arcade, and if you
choose, purchase a world-famous banana daiquiri.
After your island
orientation you will be taken to Magens Bay, one of the world's
most beautiful beaches. This area features a well-protected white
sand beach stretching nearly three quarters of a mile.

8:30 AM to 3:30 PM
FEES subject to change anytime, so register now, before rates increase
Rate INCLUDES lunch
in a cafe on Grand Case Beach. Plus, on your boat, you will get one
regular brand of beer and a brand of light beer, Coke, Diet Coke,
Sprite, and bottled water. Snorkel gear is also
included.
Experience the
number-one rated private shore excursion in St. Maarten. This tour
is an excellent value and a very family friendly trip.
It is fun for swimmers
and non swimmers. This tour offers the highest level and quality of
service.
Your boat, which
holds 17 people or less, leaves from near the cruise ship pier and
does an all day excursion around St. Maarten.
This tour is not
sold through cruise ships, so it avoids the cruise ship crowds. We
visit places that are special hidden jewels in the French Natural
Reserve, where boats with more than 28 people are
forbidden.
We depart from Dock Maarten, Philipsburg at 9:00 AM, where several new boats will take you on the ride of a lifetime. The capacity is between 10 and 17 passengers on modern speedboats with shade and sun, space to move around and powered with up to 3 X 300 HP motors. We return about 3 PM. Lunch is included in the fee.
We take off along
the South coast of St. Maarten to Simpson Bay and through the Dutch
side bridge into the Simpson Bay Lagoon.
We then cross to
the French side of the lagoon, towards Marigot and under the French
side bridge into the Caribbean Sea.
We travel along the
North coast of St. Maarten stopping to see all the beaches along
this coast, Lovers Beach, Friars Bay, Happy Bay, and Grand Case. We
also pass a most interesting rock formation.
Depending on the
weather and the number of boats present, we stop at Creole Rock or
one of the other nice spots to do some snorkeling.
After that, we
continue along the coast, past Anse Marcel toward the eastern side
of the island and the Atlantic Ocean. This will bring us to Pinel Island where we
spend about 30 minutes to rest and relax after snorkeling. Pinel is
a tropical paradise with calm, shallow, blue water and swaying palm
trees. There is a small boutique under the palm trees where you
will find unique items not found in the normal tourist traps on St.
Maarten and the prices are very reasonable.
After, we head over
to Tintemarre Island if the group and the waves allow. It can be
rough going there, but the spot is nice and a great place to swim
and walk the beach.
Tintemarre is a
deserted tropical island with a beautiful beach and is usually
un-crowded. There is no development on the island and no public
transportation to it. Here we snorkel with sea turtles and sting
rays.
Lunch is served in
a cafe on Grand Case Beach, the town know as the culinary capital
of the Caribbean. Choices are ribs, chicken or fresh mahi mahi and
for those that do not eat meat or fish we have a really good
vegetarian salad plate. Most food allergies can be accommodated
with no problem.
On the way back to
Philipsburg, we go back all the way around the island past Bay
Rouge, Plum Bay, and Long Bay.
At Long Bay we stop
and swim with some special friends that Captain Bob has in the
water and this is GREAT fun and very exciting for almost
everybody.
Then we pass
Cupecoy and Mullet Bay.
We then stop at
Maho Bay where we TRY to catch a big jet taking off or landing at
the international airport. The planes pass very close over your
heads and you get to see why PJIA international Airport is listed
as one of the 10 most dangerous airports in the world. I think it
was rated as #3 on the TV show of the same name.
Because the airport
services a small island, there are not flights coming and going all
day, every day. Normally we do get to see at least one big plane
come in and go out but there is no guarantee. Some days there are
no flights scheduled at the time we go by and on other days, if
there is a delay or the plane leaves early we may miss
them.
We do not get off
the boat at Maho beach because boats are forbidden to come close to
the beach for safety reasons. The effect of being on the water
right under them is still impressive plus the view of the "nuts"
standing behind the jets as they take off is quite
interesting.
Then we continue back to Philipsburg for a 3 PM arrival.

passed and their loved ones in the audience, from how they passed
over and who they are sharing their time with on the other side;
not to mention many other obscure details about their lives when
they lived on earth. Kim refers to herself as the journalist of
psychics because as she is doing a reading, she asks many detailed
questions to the energy she is communicating with. Those in the
audience may get an exclusive opportunity to communicate with their
loved ones on the other side, an experience not many on this planet
are able to have.

JIM OLIVER Special Event:
Harmonies of Light Transformational Music and Color Meditation Experience
Harmonies of Light features a one-of-a-kind lighting system that shines the harmonized colors that mathematically relate to the musical notes on the keyboards. Jim's specialty is to spontaneously create deeply engaging transformational music based on the energy and intention of the group present. Add the expanded dimension of coordinated lighting and you have a profoundly personal musical journey offering alignment with your True-Self. This is an energetic co-creation which guides the music that comes through for the highest purpose in this moment. The music and color offer an opportunity to connect with Pure Source Energy.
Jim follows his heart and brings forth the Music of the Spheres. As the music flows, you are bathed in the related colors of the music. Experience your multi-dimensional self in the most innovative way Jim has come up with so far. The music offers full integration of Body, Mind, Spirit and Emotions. The music facilitates stepping into an Awakened Heart.
Debra Poneman says: "Jim Oliver's music is unlike anything you've ever heard before. You don't listen to this music, you experience it. In fact, every cell of your body experiences it. It creates coherence in your brain and opens you to an influx of light, love and deep peace."
