Royal Caribbean
Independence of the Seas
Cruise Ship

OUR SEMINAR-AT-SEA SHIP
Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas

Say hello to one of the world's biggest and most imaginative ships at sea. The newly renovated, incredible Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas is a marvel of maritime engineering. The third of Royal Caribbean's Freedom-class of ships, the magnificent Independence of the Seas has every imaginable onboard facility to ensure your cruise is truly out of this world.

In April 2013, the ship underwent a $7 million upgrade. During the multimillion dollar refurbishment, the ship gained several new features that debuted on Oasis of the Seas, including a cupcake shop, an Italian trattoria, and a Royal Babies & Tots Nursery. On the technology side, the ship got new digital signage, bow-to-stern Wi-Fi, and a poolside movie screen.

The ship comes fully loaded with an unlimited supply of onboard adventure. You'll find a shipboard surf park and cantilevered whirlpools suspended 112 feet above the ocean, H2O Zone water park, flat screen TVs in every stateroom, and Royal Caribbean's own Vitality Wellness Program, in addition to unexpected amenities like a full-size boxing ring and a 14-person family suite. And that's just the short list.

Independence of the Seas is packed with all the phenomenal onboard experiences you'd expect from the Royal Caribbean Freedom class of ships—including the FlowRider surf simulator, rock climbing wall, ice-skating rink, Royal Promenade, mini golf course, and much more.

New technology knowhow is paraded in the form of interactive in-cabin televisions and the addition of digital deck plan systems, which are located throughout the ship to help passengers navigate with the use of LCD touch-screens that offer customized directions and routing, real time updates and ship factoids.

If you've ever thought of surfing, now's your chance with the amazing FlowRider. Prefer to take it easy? Soak up the rays and the view in the above-the-sea whirlpools. The ship offers the incredible H2O Zone waterpark, first-run movies in the 3D theater or poolside under the stars on the outdoor movie screen, and the Royal Promenade with its enticing shops and cafes.

Royal Caribbean has introduced a ship in Independence of the Seas that offers infinite options in the areas of fitness, recreation and entertainment. With the sheer number of options onboard, you might never want to leave!

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS FACTS

Independence of the Seas entered service in May of 2008 and joined her two sisters Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas as the world's largest cruise ships at that time. At 160,000 GRT, Independence of the Seas weighs more than 80,000 cars or 32,000 adult elephants and would trump New York's famed Chrysler building (1,046 feet) and Paris' Eiffel Tower (986 feet) if it stood upright on its bow. Boasting a width of 185 feet, the ship is actually wider than the White House is long (168 feet), and when measured from the waterline to the top of the funnel, Independence of the Seas towers 208 feet tall, approximately the same height as two of the Statue of Liberty, placed head to toe.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS STATEROOMS

With many different staterooms to choose from, Independence of the Seas has an abundance of options at all price levels. See all the details in every Category on our Staterooms page here: CLICK HERE

Beautifully designed, decorated, and appointed, all staterooms maximize the use of space. They are equipped with desks, safes, hair dryers, Wi-Fi Internet access, mini-fridges and flat-screen TV's that feature a range of channels (ESPN, CNN, BBC World, TNT, Cartoon Network, VH1 en Espanol and several RCI ad channels), as well as interactive options (order shore excursions and room service, or check your expenses).

CONFERENCE CENTER

This comfortable conference center features state-of-the-art presentation equipment and a variety of meeting rooms. Our main meeting room for our NewLife Expo and seminar-at-sea will be located in this conference center. Some our meetings might be held in the Labyrinth nightclub.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS DRESS CODE

Meals in the main dining room follow this schedule:

For a 5-night cruise, 3 casual nights, 1 smart casual night, and 1 formal night.
For a 7-night cruise, 4 casual nights, 1 smart casual night, and 2 formal nights.
For an 8-night cruise, 4 casual nights, 2 smart casual nights, and 2 formal nights.

For formal nights, quite a number of men choose to wear tuxedos for formal dining, though dark suits are more common. Women are typically found in cocktail dresses or gowns.

On an eight-night cruise, there are two formal nights; the rest are resort casual (tropical sundresses and pants outfits for women, khakis and collared shirts for men). On the formal nights, those who dine in the ship's main restaurant venue tend to be the most dolled-up; passengers not in the mood to dress in black tie (most men actually just wear jackets and ties, and few women sported beaded gowns) head to the Windjammer buffet venue, Johnny Rocket's or to casual eateries along the promenade.

On five-night cruises, there is just one formal night. However, it is not compulsory, and many choose not to participate and dine in Windjammers buffet or Jade buffet to avoid the formal attire.

GRATUITIES / TIPPING

Royal Caribbean passengers are charged $12 per person, per day ($14.25 for suite guests). Gratuities are prepaid for large groups such as ours. Passengers can modify or remove gratuities by visiting the guest services desk while onboard. A 15 percent gratuity is automatically added to bar tabs.

STAYING INFORMED: CRUISE COMPASS

Every day during your cruise with Royal Caribbean International, you will receive a copy of the Cruise Compass in the late afternoon. The Cruise Compass functions as your itinerary and lists the detailed schedule and activities for the next day.

This includes info about the ship schedule, dining, entertainment, spa and fitness, special events, lectures, port information, shore excursions, shopping, and more. CLICK HERE for a sample.

IN-STATEROOM TV AND MOVIES

Every room on Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas has an interactive TV to give you up to date information about what is happening on the ship. The TV interfaces with your SeaPass account so you can book shows and shore excursions at the touch of a button. You can access a variety of electronic commerce services such as previewing and reserving shore excursions, watching on-demand movies and informational videos, ordering room service, enjoying games of chance, and reviewing your SeaPass account and shipboard activities.

Royal Caribbean's RCTV offers at least 29 channels of in-room television programming fleet-wide, including satellite channels such as CNN International and ESPN International; TNT; Cartoon Network & Boomerang; Discovery, featuring the best of the Travel Channel, The Learning Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel; Bloomberg TV; CNNfn; CNN Espanol; and two movie channels that play recently released theatrical films before they hit the premium cable circuit.

In addition, Royal Caribbean has developed many channels exclusive to the cruise line that offer a variety of hand-picked shows in the lineup, including classic TV shows on Retro TV; current sitcoms and dramas on Family TV; classic movies on Royal Classics; and music videos and E! Entertainment TV programs on XYtv. Later this summer, Royal Caribbean will launch Venus TV with programming including daytime drama soap operas and E! & Style network shows geared to women.

Each Royal Caribbean ship has its own full-service mini TV station at sea complete with a television production crew and editing studio. In addition to keeping the pre-produced programming on schedule and pulling down live satellite feeds, the ships' broadcast technicians produce and edit onboard TV broadcasts, from the Cruise-In-Review videos to highlights of daily entertainment, art auctions, and other activities.

INTERNET CAFE and LIBRARY

The Internet Cafe is on Deck 8 (just above the library) and offers a dozen or so terminals, along with a printer. The standard rate for accessing the Internet, via the cafe or through Wi-Fi, which is located all over the ship, is approximately 65 cents per minute (subject to change). Packages are available that bring down the cost:
$35 for 60 minutes
$55 for 100 minutes
$75 for 150 minutes
$100 for 250 minutes
These rates are all subject to change.

A library on Deck 7, aft, has a limited selection of unlocked shelves of books.

FIND A QUIET RETREAT ON THE SHIP

Though cruise ships are known for round-the-clock activity, you can find sanctuary on the ship. Here are some ideas:

When crowds on deck or in public areas become overwhelming, you can seek solace in your stateroom. If you want a blissfully quiet experience, book a stateroom where the laundry room, elevators, or other noisy public facilities are not within earshot. If you are traveling with the family, minimize your stress by booking a Family Cabin. Balcony staterooms or suites make for an idyllic retreat, with extra living space inside and a private verandah outside. In addition, passengers in suites get several amenities that make their vacation more relaxing.

Retreat to the glass-canopied, adults-only Solarium pool, where inspired surroundings, a light-fare cafe, and whirlpools promise the ultimate in relaxation. Rent a private cabana for a few hours, or claim a lounger in an adults-only section of the deck. Visit one of the unique cantilevered whirlpools, extending 13 feet beyond the side of the ship for a unique at-sea perspective. Vist the Vitality Spa, a luxurious sanctuary boasting signature treatments, medi-spa services, and a full-service salon to make you glow from the inside out. Find peace at the well-stocked library, featuring a variety of genres, plus tables for cards and board games. The outside strolling area (along the jogging track) is a great place to read or nap.

Get free room service for breakfast in bed or lunch/dinner on your private balcony. Or visit one of the specialty restaurants for a quiet ambience. If you eat meals during off-peak hours, the main dining rooms and buffets will be significantly quieter. Try the formal dining room for breakfast or lunch, rather than fighting crowds at the buffet.

On cruise line private beaches, rent a private cabana where you can have some space to yourself and perhaps splurge on a massage. Plus, having a place to shower, change and store your stuff will keep your island visit hassle-free. On port days, stay on the ship to avoid lineups for tenders and jam-packed beaches and souvenir shops. On a sunny shore day when everyone else is off the ship, retreat to the spa, sit by the pool in a perfect spot, and enjoy nearly empty dining rooms.

ROYAL PROMENADE SHOPPING MALL

The undisputed hub inside the ship is Independence of the Seas' Royal Promenade. Spanning three football fields in length, it's lined with a range of shops, casual eateries, and bars. It's also the site of numerous special events; particularly fun are the Adventure Ocean parades, with kids dressed up in costumes and chanting or singing as they pass by.

The Royal Promenade is designed like an indoor suburban shopping mall, a four-story corridor running the length of the ship. Guests can begin their culture quest at one of the varied and diverse experiences found there, including a new 3600-volume Book Nook for relaxed reading and an Italian-style pizzeria, Sorrento's, for an afternoon with a group of friends. On Independence of the Seas, the English pub located off the Royal Promenade is the "Dog and Badger." At A Clean Shave, male guests can rekindle the nostalgia of their favorite neighborhood barbershop, indulging in traditional shaving, scalp and shoulder massages, haircut and shoe-shining services.

The area stays busy on sea days and in the evening, with stores open till 11 p.m. Fliers for merchandize and sales arrive in your cabin daily. A variety of name-brand, duty-free shopping includes jewelry, perfumes, apparel and shopping for teens and kids. The shops are visually appealing, and it's enjoyable to stroll along and browse the special sale kiosks that are brought out during peak traffic days.

The jewelry store features watches, jewelry, sunglasses, amber jewelry, Swarovski crystals, accessories, handbags, leather products, and clothing. The Perfume & Cosmetics store covers most of the big brands. At the Logo Souvenir shop, there is plenty of Royal Caribbean merchandise - shirts, teddy bears, mugs, thermos bottles, plus Independence of the Seas model ships, as well as resort wear. Also a small selection of sundries, including sun block, tampons, pain relievers, toothpaste, etc.

The General Store carries duty-free liquor and cartons of cigarettes, to be collected during final debarkation off the ship. Also paperback fiction titles, snacks and candies, more sundries as well as a few oddball items, like a hand-held luggage scale, luggage locks, and walkie-talkies. A shop called Get Out There has active wear watches, sunglasses, clothing, hats, flip flops, shoes, outdoor sunblock, and resort wear.

Art Auction at Sea

At the popular "Art Auction At Sea" where you can purchase collectible art while onboard your cruise. Reportedly, several companies that run art auctions onboard cruise ships will provide an appraisal with their art that will lead you to believe that you are getting very good value. There are those with opinions that the appraisal methods are questionable. So, if you are inclined to buy something at one of these auctions, a common sense approach to avoid feeling like you got ripped off is to never buy thinking you will make a profit, buy the art because it suits your tastes and budget.

SHIP FEATURES

DINING

Independence of the Seas offers passengers a wide variety of dining options. Aft of the Royal Promenade is the spectacular three-level main dining room with all three levels connected by a dramatic grand staircase. Three separate and distinct dining levels depict famous works of Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet on deck 3, Macbeth on deck 4, and King Lear on deck 5.

Two smaller dining rooms, adjoining the Leonardo level, are available for smaller parties. The Main Dining area accommodates 2000 people + 50 + 50 people in the two separate areas, and is large enough for a two seating arrangement for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Each level of the main dining room area is served by a separate galley in the aft end of the ship on decks 3,4 and 5.

If you are interested in something more casual, Johnny Rockets 24 hour fast food restaurant on deck 12 provides classic American fare including burgers and fries. The Windjammer Cafe on Deck 11 is the main casual dining area serving breakfast, lunch and light dinners.

There are also alternative restaurants on board. Those looking for something more intimate may want to consider Portofino, an upscale Euro-Italian restaurant. Reservations are required and there is a service charge. The Island Grill is the other alternative restaurant, also located on Deck 11. The setting here is more casual and reservations are not required.

Main Dining Room
The world-class food and decor in the main dining rooms makes them the perfect choice for groups both large and small. From heavenly entrees to delectable desserts - and dining options to suit a range of vacationing needs - this is fine dining that everyone can enjoy.

Our NewLife 2015 Cruise and Seminar-at-sea will have our own assigned seating area in the Main Dining Room for dinner. You will be able to sit anywhere within that area each night. Our dining hours will be "early seating": 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm nightly. We suggest arriving early so you can enjoy the company of other Seminar participants and Speakers.

The vast, three-deck-high dining room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Daytime meals, which are open-seating, are limited to Romeo and Juliet on Deck 3, and there's rarely a wait for a table.

At breakfast, a standard American menu offers cruise basics, from eggs Benedict and pancakes to granola and omelets. There's always a special; chocolate-chip pancakes and almond-crusted French toast were among them. Kudos to the staff for not forcing passengers to dine communally, though the more sociable could be seated at big tables.

At lunch, there's a new twist with the introduction of RCI's Brasserie 30. Borrowing liberally from European cruise lines for whom a buffet/menu combo is a staple, Independence of the Seas has added a buffet setup to Romeo and Juliet for the midday meal. It features a make-your-own-salad bar (actually, you pick your toppings, and a crewmember mixes it for you) and a wonderful antipasta selection for those who want light fare. It's a terrific choice if you want a quick lunch in the quiet and elegant atmosphere of the dining room, and it's one of the better lunchtime offerings for vegetarians.

And, of course, still offered is a menu of lunch entrees, featuring hot dishes, soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts.

For dinner, the service is exceptional, no matter where you sit. Menus offer a list of starters (salads, soups, appetizers), entrees and desserts. An "every night" series of selections includes vegetarian pasta, broiled salmon, chicken breast and sirloin. Overall, food quality in the dining room is quite good for banquet-style dining. The fruit soups are standouts (light, delicious, flavorful), pancakes are fluffy and served hot, and the aforementioned lunchtime antipasta offerings are delicious. Dinner in any of the three main restaurants is a lovely, elegant affair; musicians play classical music throughout the evening. The "Chops Grille filet mignon" is available for $14.95. It is delicious - cooked perfectly to order and accompanied by a better quality mashed potato side than what comes with other dinners.

Windjammer and Jade Buffet
Your first stop upon boarding the Independence of the Seas will probably be the Windjammer Cafe, the buffet style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is a popular family restaurant because there are no fixed dining times, so you can eat at a time to suit you. There is a fantastic array of food to choose from, including healthy options for those who are diet conscious. You will also find lots of snacks available like pizza, cakes and desserts during the afternoon and late evening. The menu changes a bit each day but there are a lot of items that are served day after day.

The restaurant has a large salad bar for lunch and dinner plus burgers, hot dogs, pizza, sandwiches, soups and a wide variety of hot and cold dishes. You can have Prime Rib one day, Steak, Seafood, Indian Food, Pasta and lots of international dishes. There is a large selection.

You can eat as much as you want for as long as you want there, and people do. Water, coffee, tea and milk is free. You need to pay for cocktails, wine or soda.

Jade Restaurant - Asian-themed Restaurant
The Jade Restaurant is close to the Windjammer Cafe and offers buffet-style Asian cuisine. The restaurant opens for dinner between 6 pm and 9.30 pm, although there is open seating so you can choose what time you eat. There is a fantastic choice of Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Indian dishes to choose from, as well as a sushi chef who will prepare the sushi to your own tastes and requirements.

Vitality Menu and Vegetarian Options
Worthy of note is the ship's Vitality menu -- dishes created for passengers with healthy lifestyles. There are ample vegetarian options in most eateries, as well. The Vitality offerings are available in the main dining rooms and the buffet venue.

Room Service
Room service is available 24 hours a day, with a $3.95 charge for orders placed between midnight and 5 a.m. The breakfast menu (you fill out a card and hang it on your door before going to sleep) is rather more generous than some of RCI's big-ship competitors, going beyond Continental fare to offer "country breakfast" items like eggs and bacon. It's available for delivery between 7 and 10 a.m. The rest of the time, the selection, though limited, offers a blend of healthy and fast food choices, such as fruit plates, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizza and chili, along with desserts.

New Eating Venues

There are two new eating venues on Independence, following its upgrade: an Italian Trattoria called Giovanni's Table, and The Cupcake Cupboard, which follows the current trend of installing cafes and bakeries onboard.

Giovanni's Table
Giovanni's Table (6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.), on Deck 11, is a new for-fee, family friendly place with a relaxed theme and good, hearty cuisine. The waiters greet you with a warm welcome in Italian and guide you to your seat. Neat and simple tables and decor –- ideal for a family with young children who may fidget during the meal. The food is beautifully presented and still maintains a rustic charm in its blend of Italian herbs and seasonings. One of the starters, focaccia della casa –- a flat bread with potatoes, marinated artichokes, olives and pesto –- is a perfect example of well cooked, homely food. The oven baked, almond crusted scallops with red bell pepper are a more delicate starter and a lighter option, which is good to know if you wanted to choose from some of the more hearty, carb-filled mains. There are dishes for vegetarians and those with a specific dietary requirements. Dinner is $20 p.p. and $15 p.p. for lunch (on the last sea day, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.).

Cupcake Cupboard
The Cupcake Cupboard has been added to the main thoroughfare of the ship, the "High Street," offering a cute display of gourmet cupcakes. It has regular cupcakes at $2.75, Minis at $1.50, Cake Pops at $1.50 and Giant Birthday Cakes at $24.95. Decorated with soft yellow, wooden panelling and mint green finishes, it is the perfect spot to sit and enjoy a coffee and a cake. There is also a display by the entrance selling an assortment of cupcake themed trinkets like greeting cards, pens and other small souvenirs that are a perfect memento for children and those who love all things sweet. The shop also offers design classes for the budding culinary enthusiast. These are priced at $22 for adults (11 years-up) and $15 for children (five years-10 years). Each class has a maximum of 10 people so it is best to turn up early to make your booking. The Cupcake Cupboard is open on late arrival from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., early arrival from 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and sea days from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 pm. Sprinkle some sweetness into your cruise at this adorable 1940s style shop featuring fresh-baked gourmet cupcakes, with a new cupcake flavor showcased every day (including bubble gum, strawberry, red velvet, root beer and more). Private decorating parties and cupcake-design classes are also offered.

More Favorite Places to Eat

Johnny Rockets
Get the family together for good old-fashioned burgers and fries. The Johnny Rockets restaurant is everything you'd expect from the shoreside restaurant - authentic 1950s decor, a menu filled with all-American favorites and, of course, friendly service. Johnny Rockets is a great casual dining alternative that everyone in the family will enjoy. Johnny Rocket's is the only eatery onboard to offer outdoor seating. This 1950's diner-style national chain eatery features its trademark hamburgers, chili dogs, onion rings, fries and milkshakes. (The Oreo sundae is worth trying!) If you hear the Bee Gees starting to rev up on "Saturday Night Fever," you'll know that the wait staff is about ready to break into a dance. Linger over your meal, and you'll be treated to several versions! The rate to dine at Johnny Rocket's is $4.95 per person (no matter how much or how little you order) and does not include drinks, such as sodas, beer or milkshakes.

Portofino's
Portofino's is an Italian restaurant and the most romantic onboard, and service is as excellent as the cuisine. The fee is $20 per person, and dishes include starters like risotto with tiger shrimp, caprese salad and soups. There's also a pasta course, and though the menu varies, choices on my visit included spaghetti with lobster, penne pomodoro with prosciutto and pappardelle with mascarpone and mushrooms. Entrees are rich and substantial, with choices like tenderloin (and truffle mashed potatoes), saltimbocca, halibut and chicken. The tiramisu is, as would be expected, exceptional as a dessert choice, but you can also order panna cotta and other Italian favorites, or opt for a cheese course.

Portofino also offers a once-a-cruise wine dinner. At $54.50 per person, the five-course meal is fantastic. It starts with tuna carpaccio, moves on to pan-seared scallops with a sweet-and-meaty chunk of lobster, a light salad and beef medallions, then finishes with mascarpone and strawberry crepes. Each course is matched with a different wine (included in the price), though the pairings seemed rather disconnected; there was no significant explanation about why we were eating each course with the chosen wine. Ultimately, what was fun about the event was the chance to meet fellow passengers who were enthused about food and wine.

Chops Grille
Chops Grille is a guest favorite, the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or simply be treated to a fantastic dinner. Enjoy juicy steaks, fresh seafood, hearty side dishes and delicious desserts in an elegant atmosphere. From filet mignon to mesquite-grilled salmon, Chops Grille offers much more than simple meat and potatoes.
Chops Grille is the ship's steakhouse restaurant, and it's the most expensive alternative eatery with a service charge of $30 per person. The menu is steakhouse-influenced with starters like shrimp cocktail -- nice, fat ones! -- and Caesar salad; various cuts of meat, including filet mignon, lamb and pork; and family-size side dishes, such as succotash and mashed potatoes.

Note: You can make reservations at both Portofino and Chops Grille before your trip, via Royal Caribbean's Web site. (If you have a special date in mind, I highly recommend you do so, as both restaurants regularly "sell out.") A heads-up, though: When you book pre-cruise, you're required to guarantee with a credit card, and the charge is put through immediately, rather than being added to your onboard account.

Ice Cream Options
You can snack on soft ice cream at the pool-adjacent Sprinkles (no charge) or splurge on Ben & Jerry's in the promenade.

Sorrento's Pizzeria
In the mood for a slice?
Enjoy traditional favorites topped with cheese and pepperoni, or go for something new such as Chicken and Potato, Chorizo, or Frutti di Mare pizza. Sorrento's (generally open from 11:30 a.m. – 3 a.m.) serves thick, doughy pizza along with antipasta and Italian desserts. (The tiny tiramisu is divine.)

Cafe Promenade
The Cafe Promenade, the ship's only 24-hour restaurant, is a casual-dining spot that offers breakfast pastries, sandwiches, salads, and pizza. There are also plenty of delicious snacks like crepes, cakes and desserts, all washed down with a cup of speciality tea or coffee. There's no fee to dine in either restaurant, though coffees and other drinks do incur a charge.

Squeeze Health Juice Bar and Wipe-Out Bar
Independence of the Seas introduces two new sipping spots on the high seas, including Squeeze, a refreshing juice bar near the H2O Zone for health-conscious cruisers, and the Wipe Out! bar, a free-standing shack near the FlowRider surf park which offers draft beer, wine and icy fruit drinks in a casual and fun environment.

ENTERTAINMENT

Courageous crooners, theater buffs and gutsy gamblers will delight in Independence of the Seas's engaging entertainment offerings, from Broadway and ice-skating shows to blackjack and karaoke. Guests can find their 15 seconds of fame at the On Air Club, Independence of the Seas's karaoke venue, equipped with state-of-the-art theatrical lighting, video cameras, flat screen TVs and even a "green screen" for aspiring music stars to record their own music video.

For professional entertainment, the Art Deco-style Arcadia Theatre (1,350 guests) features three shows: Marquee, a medley of performances, the musical Now You See It! magic show, and Once Upon a Time, a narrative piece combining the Brothers Grimm's fairytales.

At night, musical offerings range from Latin dance music and "name that tune" cabaret-style experiences to disco and pop tunes at the pub. All of the bars get pretty busy, including Vintages, the wine bar; the pleasantly musty, nautically themed Schooner Bar; Bolero's, with its Latin music and dancing; the Vintages Champagne bar; and the top-of-the-ship Viking Crown Lounge.

Alhambra Theatre
The gorgeous view isn't the only thing that will dazzle you onboard your cruise ship. World-class performers from all over the globe star in awe-inspiring original shows by Royal Caribbean Productions. It could be a contemporary stage production or a Las Vegas-inspired floorshow, a headline musical act, or a fast and loose live comedy show. No matter which show is on stage, one thing's for sure - it'll leave you cheering. The ship's Alhambra Theater, a two-deck-high Broadway-like performance space, is home to song and dance shows and also hosts a celebrity performer.

Studio B
You won't believe your eyes when you step into Studio B. It's where you'll find the onboard ice-skating rink and professional ice shows, which are a "must-see." Studio B is also home to onboard game shows, onboard parties, cooking demonstrations, and more.

Skating performances take place several times throughout each cruise, both during the day and at night, and these are a must-see! In the Caribbean, the same program is performed at each show.

The skating shows are held in Studio B, where the performers must maneuver around a pocket-sized ice rink. Even in this small space, the performances display awesome creativity, spectacle and energy.

Promenade Street Parties
A highlight of any ship with Royal Caribbean's Promenade is evening parties with the vibe of street festivals. The Promenade hosts nightly street parades, put on by select staff, commencing from a revolutionary new descending bridge amidst a fanfare of music, lasers and lights. Both Rock Britannia and the Madhatter's Ball Parade feature costumes, music, singing and dancing by performers. Especially darling is a parade, mid-voyage, of a group of young passengers from the ship's Adventure Ocean youth program, who sing as they march along.

Late Night
The late-night crowd has entertainment options too, including disco-dancing at the two-level Labyrinth, a comedy show, a "millionaire game show," the occasional "dancing under the stars" deck party and a once-per-cruise midnight buffet.

Pubs
You'll think you've popped "across the pond" as you lift a pint of ale at The Dog and Badger English pub. Stop by for a low-key get-together and sample the wide variety of imported beers and ales.

Vintages
Experience Vintages, the first-ever wine bar at sea. Together with Robert Mondavi, Beringer Blass Wine Estates and Niebaum-Coppola, Royal Caribbean has created a first-rate wine bar everyone can enjoy. The menu includes a range of options from some of the best wine-producing regions in the world. You can also take part in a wine tasting class.

Casino Royale
The Casino Royale features some 300 slot machines (ranging from one cent to $25) and a range of table games, such as blackjack and Texas Hold 'Em. Beyond simple gambling, there are occasional events and tournaments. Casino Royale is a little bit Vegas, a little bit Monte Carlo. There are games for all levels of players.

Boleros
Follow the sounds of the Latin beat and you'll find yourself in Boleros, a Latin-themed club and nighttime hot spot. Cool off with one of the refreshing specialty drinks, like a mojito or caipirina. And for those who can keep up with the live Latin music, the dance floor is all yours.

On Air Club
Step into the spotlight and sing your favorite songs. It's a chance for Independence's most gifted guest singers to battle it out for the title of Karaoke Superstar!

Viking Crown Lounge
No Royal Caribbean cruise is complete without a stop in this signature lounge. Perched high above the sea, this glass-enclosed lounge is quite possibly the best place onboard to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sun set or head up there early in the morning to enjoy the view or read a book, since it will be the quietest place on the ship at that time.

Chapel and Cinema
A small chapel at the top of the ship (above Olive or Twist) is mostly used for onboard weddings.

There's a small cinema that plays the same movies you would find on airplane in-flight entertainment systems.

Outdoor Movie Screen
Watch first-run movies and big time sporting events the way they were meant to be seen - poolside, under the stars. A screen hoisted above the main pool area will showcase all the larger-than-life action.

POOLS AND FITNESS

The ship's sun deck, which consists of three distinct pool areas, is magically colorful, full of energy and comfortable.

The center pool with its attendant whirlpools is party-central - at least during the daytime. It's the site of lighthearted fun, pool contests and music on sea days.

H2O Zone
The H2O Zone integrates colorful sculptures around a series of sprinklers, jets and water cannons that guests can use to soak each other. In the evening, it transforms into a beautifully lit sculpture garden.
You'll want to be a kid again if only to be able to frolic in the whimsically decorated children-only H20 Zone, a water park that incorporates small pools (some slightly deep, some shallow) and all sorts of fountains and water guns.

Flowrider
Only Royal Caribbean gives you the chance to surf onboard a ship. The sloped, wavelike surface of the Flowrider is perfect for beginning, intermediate and advanced surfers.
The FlowRider is a surfing simulator only available on Freedom-class ships and above. At specially designated times, ShipShape staffers are on hand to assist passengers who want to give it a go. You must be at least 52 inches tall to use a boogie board and 58 inches to try stand-up surfing. The FlowRider is free. Passengers can also book private lessons ($75 per person) and rent out the FlowRider ($350 per hour).

Solarium
The Solarium is a pretty, though small, adults-only pool area that includes two whirlpools that are cantilevered out over the ship (great spots for watching the sun set), a bar that opens only on sea days and swinging benches.

Fitness Center
Bar none, the ship's fitness facility is among the best in cruising (as are those of Freedom and Liberty of the Seas, Indy's sister vessels). It's the first fitness area on a ship that really looks like a land-based health club. Circuit-training machines ring the walls of windows and include treadmills and stationary bikes. There's also an area for weight-lifting and a group of cycles for spinning (individually or in group classes).

The facility has a dedicated room for a variety of classes, such as yoga, aerobics, Pilates, group cycling and water aerobics. Other, less standard options include "combat in motion," a workout that combines Eastern martial arts with Western aerobic conditioning. The ship's boxing ring hosts boxing lessons and even some good-natured fights. Classes, by the way, are mostly for-charge, and it is recommended that passengers sign up in advance. (You will be charged if you're a no-show.)

The Walk for Wishes effort is a daily one-mile walk that's a result of a Royal Caribbean partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the organization that grants children with life-threatening illnesses a wish-of-a-lifetime. Participants are each required to buy a T-shirt; proceeds go to the foundation.

When in port, ask the staff at the ShipShape gym for a free, self-guided running map.

Rock Climbing Wall
The signature rock climbing walls are the most popular feature on a Royal Caribbean ship. Whether it's your first time on a rock wall or you're a seasoned climber, there are challenges for all levels of experience. Independence of the Seas' rock-climbing wall, which hovers some 30 feet above the deck and 200 feet above the sea, can accommodate two climbers at a time. There's no fee to use it.

Other recreational facilities include a full basketball court (also pressed into use for soccer games and dodge ball), a running track, mini-golf, a golf simulator and the ice rink. (Skate rentals are free of charge.)

Golf Course
If you just can't wait to get onshore, you can pick up a quick golf game right on the ship. The small course doesn't allow for long drives, but it's a great place to perfect that short game.

Vitality Day Spa
The onboard fitness center features the best equipment, saunas and whirlpools, and all the latest classes, like yoga and pilates. Plus, the full-service spa offers a beauty salon and spa treatments including massage, manicures, seaweed body wraps, and teeth whitening. To see a menu of their services, CLICK HERE

Royal Caribbean's Shipshape Day Spa offers a comprehensive range of services. The salon, tucked off to one side, features hair-cutting and styling, manicures, pedicures and teeth-whitening. The spa offers pretty much the usual range of treatments: massage (Swedish, hot stone and couples are among the varieties), reflexology, facials and body wraps. Independence of the Seas also offers acupuncture treatments, a relatively new program for Royal Caribbean that was introduced in 2007 on Liberty of the Seas.

An interesting new program on some Royal Caribbean ships, including this one, is the teen-geared YSPA program. Kids ages 13 to 17 can book treatments, such as "acne attack" and "surfer scrub." More standard massages, facials, manicures and pedicures are also available, and YSPA extends to the gym, where there are teen-only fitness workouts.

If you are on a cruise that calls at Labadee, the island massage is a lovely treat; the spa sets up a mini outdoor area on a hill, away from the crowds. Plan to wear a bathing suit under your robe if you're choosing this option.

Keep an eye out for spa discounts. They are fairly common and aren't even limited to sea days. You can check each day's program for a heads-up on what is on sale and generally save about 20 percent.
